Air Force Plays a Vital Role during Exercise “Cormorant Strike iv – 2013”

A wide spectrum of air operations were carried out by the Sri Lanka Air Force in support of  the final stages of the Field Training Exercise (FTX) CORMORANT STRIKE IV’ in Challitivumunai and Punnaikudah on 22nd and 23rd September 2013 respectively.

This was the Climax of the entire operation where the Commando Regiment and Special Forces executed their final assaults capturing simulated hostile Bases in Punnaikuda and Challitivemunai respectively by deploying small groups with the maximum coordination of the Air Force and the Sri Lanka Navy.

Air contribution was made by the simulation of engaging high value targets deploying Kfir, Mig-27 and F-7 fighter Jets and MI 24 Flying Gunships which simulated Battlefield Air Interdiction (BAI) and Battlefield Air Strikes (BAS) respectively. The SLAF also provided Tactical Airlift which included Air Cargo, paratroopers and troop transportation within this simulated theatre of operation.  AN 32 Aircraft, MI 17 and Bell 212 helicopters also played a vital role in the exercise by facilitating the insertion of Special Forces and Commandos of the Army and Regiment Special Forces of the Air Force into the theatre. Extraction of troops and Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) from simulated battle areas were also carried out by MI 17 and Bell 212 helicopters.

This Exercise which is organized by the Sri Lanka Army for the fourth consecutive year in close cooperation with Sri Lanka Navy and Air Force was designed for deployment of troops in a war milieu of Special Operations and planned for conduct of joint operations as one team, using the manoeuvrist approach, encompassing planning, execution and command. Military representatives from Bangladesh, Brazil, China, India, Nepal and Pakistan also participated in this year’s Exercise.

The Directorate of Operation of the Sri Lanka Air Force handled all Air Operations of this joint exercise which was coordinated by Group Captain Ravindra Liyanagamage who had played the role as the Senior Air Force Coordinator. The de-briefing of this fifteen day exercise is scheduled to be conducted at Sri Lanka Army Infantry Training School Minneriya on 24th September 2013.
