The Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy launched the New Smart Identification Card (Smart ID) for SLAF personnel at Air Force Headquarters today (08th May 2018).

The first printed Smart ID was handed over to Commander of the Air Force by the Acting Director Administration Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe.

The new Smart Card System, as conceptualized by the Commander, was developed by Squadron Leader RMDT Kumara of the Information Technology Unit of the SLAF under the guidance of the Chief Information Technology Officer of the SLAF, Air Commodore AS Vithana.

The new ID card is equipped with a Smart Chip which can have encrypted data saved on it, and can only be used within the SLAF IT network due to this encryption. The main purpose of introducing this card to the SLAF was to reduce the time delays faced by personnel in entering and exiting from SLAF establishments. Further, this card can be used as a secure authentication method for other IT systems utilized within the SLAF.

Chief of Staff of the SLAF, Air Vice Marshal Sumangala Dias, Members of the Air Force Board of Management and Officers also witnessed the event.
