Workshop on Transport of Trauma & Critically Ill Patients
2:03pm on Saturday 11th August 2018
The Medical sector in the recent times has understood the significance of safe transportation of critically ill patients. In line of the above, upgrading the knowledge and skills of medical personnel has been given increasing emphasis. In order to meet the above requirement, the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo has gone to the extent of introducing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Critical Care Medicine in Sri Lanka.

The requirement of Medical Evacuation was felt heavily during the recently concluded Terrorist conflict as well as during recent natural disasters which affected Sri Lanka, where the Sri Lanka Air Force was called upon to provide medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) facilities to the military and civilians alike. There is no doubt that successful execution of the above, despite facing severe limitations saved numerous lives.

With the establishment of Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine, responsibility of providing safe patient transportation has fallen collectively on the Medical Services of the Tri-Forces. Sri Lanka Army has been entrusted with reaching and evacuating individuals stranded in areas such as jungles, Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force providing evacuation for individuals stranded in regions unreachable by land.

In order to upgrade knowledge and skills on transport of critically ill patients, a workshop was conducted for the Medical Officers of Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force on 10th August 2018. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the College of Anesthesiologists and Intensivists of Sri Lanka and consisted of lectures and discussions on physiology during transfer, patient stabilization, air transfer, pediatric transfer and transportation of critically ill patients, transfer bags as well as several other important aspects of patient transfer. The workshop also consisted of table top discussions and hands on exercises in order to expose the participants to the above.

The president of the Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine, Air Vice Marshal LR Jayaweera, Five consultant Anesthesiologists from Sri Lanka College of anesthesiologists and intensivists and 40 medical officers from Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force participated in the workshop.

The workshop proved to be immensely beneficial to the participants, and came under praise from all those who attended.
