SLAF Holds Press Briefing on 69th Air Force Anniversary and Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2020

The press briefing of the "69th Air Force Anniversary" and the 21st consecutive “Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya-2020” was held at the Air Force Headquarters, Colombo this morning (26th February 2020).

The Sri Lanka Air Force will be celebrating its 69th Anniversary on the 2nd of March 2020. In upholding its tradition of rich history, the "AIR FORCE DAY" is the premier event in its calendar. This year, the event will be celebrated with great pomp and pageantry with many events lined up from 1st of Marsh onwards.

This year celebrations for the 69th Air Force Day will commence with a “Pichcha Mal Pooja” on the eve of 1st of March at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya with the participation of the Commander and a cross section of Officers, Other Ranks and SLAF Civillians.

The formal Air Force Day will be celebrated with Air Force Headquarters taking the lead on the 2nd of March with all SLAF establishments also joining in. The Air Force Day parade will be held at Air Force Headquarters under the auspices of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias. After which the Commander will make an address to the SLAF members at AFHQ and at SLAF Station Colombo. This address will be live streamed to all SLAF establishments from Colombo.

“Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya -2020” will be conducted for the 21st consecutive year in concurrence with the 69th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Over one hundred male and thirty female Sri Lankan ranking/other riders are expected to compete in this race.

The duration of the race will be 3 days. It will start on 5th March 2020 from Air Force Headquarters Colombo, passing each leg through Kandy, Trancomalee, Vavunia and finish in Anuradhapura. It will cover an approximate distance of 445 Km.
 
The final awards ceremony will be held at the Public Grounds in Anuradhapura from 1800 Hrs onwards on the 7th of March 2020 where the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias will grace the occasion with the sponsors and other distinguished guests.

While the Press Brief was conducted with the Commander of the Air Force chairing it, the Director Training and Chairman SLAF Cycling, Air Vice Marshal Prasanna Payoe, Secretary SLAF Cycling, Air Commodore Kithsiri Leelaratne, Acting Director Media of the SLAF, Group Captain Dushan Wijesinghe, the Chief Executive Officer of Softlogic (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Mohammad Rizvi, the Managing Director of Softlogic (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Ajith Priyashantha and the Director Sports of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Mr. Palitha Senarath Yapa  also participated as panel members. A large number of journalists from the electronic and print media were also present at the occasion.

The main sponsors of the race this year is Softlogic (Pvt) Ltd with Softlogic Life as the Insurance Partner, Asiri Hospitals as the Healthcare Partner and Softlogic Max as the Electronic Consumable Partner. The electronic media partner is Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation. At the conclusion of press briefing, the sponsorship cheque was handed over to the Commander by the Chief Executive Officer of Softlogic (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Mohammad Rizvi.
