Largest Heavy Transport Hangar in the History of the SLAF Declared Open by the Commander

The largest aircraft Hangar built in the history of the Sri Lanka Air Force was declared open by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias this morning (1 July 2020) at SLAF Base Ratmalana.

This Heavy Transport Hangar is to be utilized by the No 61 Flight of the No 6 Helicopter Squadron and Helitours based at SLAF Base Ratmalana. With the total handing over of lands and infrastructure to the Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd in 2019, the SLAF was provided with funds which were to be utilized to develop new infrastructure required to house Air Force Flying Squadrons at Ratmalana.

The construction of the enormous steel structure of this aircraft hangar was undertaken by a civilian contractor with the assistance of the Air Field Construction Wing at SLAF Base Ratmalana. This mammoth aircraft hangar has a staggering workable floor area of 43,777 square feet and consists of a two storied annexure building which will house the Administrative Offices and Servicing Bays of No 61 Flight and the Helitours.

The construction of the hangar was conducted directly under the supervision of the Directorate of Civil Engineering at Air Force Headquarters with the coordination of the Base Commander at SLAF Base Ratmalana, Air Commodore Sampath Wickramaratne. The Air Field Construction Wing at SLAF Base Ratmalana was responsible for the concreating of the hangar floor together with an enormous aircraft parking apron which has a floor area of 94,723 square feet and also two connecting taxiways to the main runway at Ratmalana. The entire electrical wiring of this new hangar was carried out by the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Wing at SLAF Base Katunayake.

The event was attended by the Chief of Staff, Members of the Air Force Board of Management, Base Commander of SLAF Base Ratmalana, members of the No 61 Flight and Helitours.
