1:37pm on Friday 3rd June 2011
No. 111 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Squadron celebrated its 3rd anniversary on 1st June 2011 at SLAF Base Vavuniya.

The squadron was initially established in year 1996 as No.11 UAV flight, acquiring Israeli built ‘Super Scout’ UAV’s to gather air intelligence for SLAF. Subsequently more advanced ‘Searcher MK II’ UAV’s from Israel were added to the fleet. On 1st June 2008 the formation was remodeled as No 111 UAV Squadron to cater the demanding operational requirements.

No 111 UAV Squadron flew its Searcher MK II UAV's extensively throughout the "Humanitarian Operations", providing invaluable visual intelligence to both SL Army ground commanders and all fighter squadrons in SLAF. Also the squadron was one of the key contributors to the success of the operation “burning midnight oil”. The contribution was unheard and unseen by the rest of the nation.

To mark the event the formation day parade was held on 1st June 2011 and the Commanding Officer Wing Commander Shehan Wijayanayake inspected the parade. At the parade the squadron “Airman of the Year” award was presented to 25384 Cpl Pushpakumara DGGL (Air Frame) and also a special donation of Rs.25000.00 is presented to SLAF civil employee Mr. EM Premarathne, who is been serving at this squadron since year 2001, by the Commanding Officer, for the treatments of his wife who is suffering from chronic back pain.

A cricket tournament in which all ranks participated followed the parade on this memorable day of the squadron.
