The prestigious Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) launched the centenary Shakespeare Shield Golf Tournament at its golf links in May this year under the generous sponsorship of M/s Carson Cumberbatch PLC.

The Shakespeare Shield, coveted and keenly competed for by Sri Lanka’s golfing community, was instituted by the renowned Carson Cumberbatch & Co. in the early twentieth century (1911) in memory of one of their revered former Chairmen, Mr. W. Shakespeare.

The tournament, played under the ‘foursome match’ format, is open for members of the RCGC and employees and Directors of registered mercantile sector companies, government departments, armed forces and police, diplomatic community and entrepreneurs.

This year’s centenary tournament attracted 32 teams and after 17 weeks of arduous competition through several rounds, the Ministry of Defence Team and Nobles (Pvt) Ltd Team won their way through the qualifying rounds and met at the Championship game that was played this morning; 25 August 2011.

Ministry of Defence Team, comprising the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama and Major General Srinath Rajapakse, became Runners Up of this prestigious Golf Tournament. The winners were the team from Nobels (Pvt) Ltd represented by Mr. Sidath Wettimuny and Mr Nihal Wettimuny. The awards will be given away at a gala awards night to be held shortly.
