China Bay Air Force Hospital Upgraded to a Formation

The Medical Unit at China Bay which has provided high quality medical services to Air Force personnel and civilians at China Bay for several decades was upgraded to the status of a Formation within the Sri Lanka Air Force on 26th September 2011 on a directive issued by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama.

Sqn Ldr (Dr) PAV Padmaperuma has been appointed as the first Commanding Officer of this new formation. The upgrading of status was formally recognized on 4th October 2011 with a religious ceremony where the Chief Incumbent of the China Bay Raja MahaViharaya participated. The event was graced by Group Captain Prasanna Ranasinghe the Acting Commandant and a cross section of officers and ranks serving at the Academy.

At present, the Hospital complex comprises of a OPD  (including ETU, Laboratory, pharmacy, Dental section and consultation rooms), A male ward of 27 beds, a Female/families ward of 12 beds, an Isolation ward of 12 beds, Officers’ ward complex (2 VIP rooms, 6 Officers’ rooms), staff rest rooms, Psychological counseling room, physiotherapy section, PHI section, stores and cook house.

Four consultants from General Hospital Trincomalee conduct regular specialist clinics (General Medicine, General Surgery, ENT Surgery and Dermatology) at the Academy hospital and two more clinics (Pediatrics and Orthopedic) are planned to be conducted in the near future as part of the ongoing development program. Future development programs includes an aircrew medical examination section, X Ray unit, upgraded laboratory, SNCO ward complex and more modern diagnostic facilities.
