59th Formation Day Of Slaf Diyatalawa

Sri Lanka Air Force Diyatalawa celebrated  its 59th Formation day on 14th October 2011.

This camp is well-known as the “Cradle of the Air Force” by all service personnel, as this Station is primarily entrusted to convert civilians who join the Air Force, into servicemen.

The Royal Ceylon Air Force first established a detachment in the salubrious and picturesque garrison town of Diyatalawa on 15th October 1952 at the Stable Hill camp as a Ground Combat and Recruit Training Unit which was the premier training establishment of the prestigious organization with a seconded Royal Air Force Officer in Command. Since the tenure of the first Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant JVP Howard, this station has been commanded by both British and Sri Lankan officers. Group Captain Janaka Amarasinghe holds the responsibility of commanding this Station presently.   

This training Station carries out training in various disciplines such as Basic Ground Combat, Gunner Instructor, Drill Instructor, Refresher Training for Officers and Advanced Regiment Training Courses for Officer Cadets as well.

This glamorous day was celebrated with the blessings of the Acting Commanding Officer Wing Commander Chaminda Wickramaratna with the participation of all officers together with all ranks and civilian staff members.

Proceedings along the path of the celebrations, a dhamma sermon was conducted and repair and renovation projects were convened at the Diyatalawa Railway Station which was established in 1905 during the period of British rule of the country for military and commercial transport purposes. Some areas of the Railway Station were in a dilapidated condition and was brought up to the standard, restoring its friendly atmosphere, during the campaign. The Base Hospital Diyatalawa was also given a spruce-up by service personnel of SLAF Station Diyatalawa. The efforts of the personnel of the station were well rewarded with the thanks of the staff of these institutions.

Finally to culminate all the activities, sports events were held to strengthen the bondage amongst all personnel in the camp. Cricket, Volleyball and Tug of War were the main attractions of the day.
