The Dental Unit at Sri Lanka Air Force Katunayake conducted a series of events coinciding with International Oral Health Day 2011.

The International Dental Federation (FDI) and World Heath Organization (WHO) initiated the first oral health day in 2008 and continued to strengthen the aim of this venture by raising oral health awareness around the world. In order to enhance awareness on oral health amongst the service personnel and their families, the following events were conducted by the Staff of the Dental Unit SLAF Base Kat. The theme of this year’s oral health day was “Non-communicable diseases and oral health” where all the programs conducted by this unit were planned using this theme as the basis.

An art competition for children within the Base, Mobile Dental Clinic for school children at Katunayake Maha Vidyalaya, and Guest lectures conducted by professional resource personnel at the Astra hall were few of the highlights of the scheduled program.

On 27 Oct 11 all the children within the Base premises were educated on good habits, oral health and related diseases. They were also provided with gifts and an art competition was conducted allowing them to select a topic based on what they learnt about oral health that day.

A comprehensive educational program was also conducted on 28 Oct 11 for school children, parents and the staff of Katunayake Maha Vidyalaya which was followed by a dental clinic for the primary section. More than 70 pupils of the primary school were treated for many oral and dental diseases.

Specialists of the respective field, Dr Nilantha Rathnayake (Institute of Oral Health) and Dr Hemantha Amarasinghe (National Cancer Control Program) delivered lectures at Astra hall on 29 Oct11, to an audience of about five hundred which comprised of families, children and servicemen/women of the Base. Also the winners of the art competition were rewarded and the gifts were distributed by the guest lecturers.
