Navy Commander visits CDS
Newly- Appointed Commander of Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral D. W. A. S. Dissanayake called on Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetileke today; the 20th of January, 2011.

Today marks Vice Admiral Dissanayake’s first visit to the Air force Head quarters after assuming duties as Commander of Navy on 15th January 2011.

Mementos were exchanged between the two commanders to mark the occasion at the conclusion of the visit.

Vice Admiral Dissanayake joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet on 1st June, 1977. After successfully completing his basic training at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee, he went overseas to India to follow a Sub Lieutenant Technical Course.

As a young officer, he attended the International Warfare Course of the Royal Navy in the United Kingdom.  Vice Admiral Dissanayake has to his name more than 8 years of service at sea and 15 years serving in the Northern and Eastern operational commands. He has also served as the Director General Operations and Director General Services at Naval Headquarters and commanded the Southern Naval Area.

In the 60-year history of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Dissanayake is the most decorated Naval Officer. He survived a LTTE suicidal attack and in the process rescued the life of a comrade and was bestowed with the Weerodara Vibhushanaya for his bravery. He has been decorated for gallantry with the accolades of Rana Sura Padakkama , Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya, the Uttama Seva Padakkama and eleven commemorative, campaign and service medals. Besides, he is the recipient of three decorative badges which include the 5-star Commendation Badge.
