Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe

Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe was born on 09 March 1966 and attended Ananda College Colombo. He joined Sri Lanka Air Force on 02 July 1985. Air Vice Marshal Jayasinghe completed all his operational conversions at No. 04 helicopter squadron well before his commissioning and was deployed in Jaffna by end of 1986 as an operational pilot where he actively took part in all major offensives against the LTTE. He is the first ever (may be the only one) to earn a Gallantry award (RSP) as an officer cadet for volunteering for a special operation carried out within highly dense LTTE territory. The officer was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 02 January 1987. Subsequently as a captain of Bell 212 and Bell 412 Helicopters, he participated in almost all major military operations during the period 1987 to 1996 and awarded with Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) once and  Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) thrice for his acts of bravery at the face of the enemy.

    In 1996, he was converted on newly acquired Mi-17 Helicopters, and took part in many Air Mobile Operations and night missions under missile threat to support forward Army Bases. In year 2000, Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe was converted on fixed wing aircraft and flew Y-12, Beech king Air Surveillance aircraft and Antonov 32s at SLAF Base Ratmalana.

He was one of the few pilots who earned “Above Average” grading from examiners of RAF central flying school.

To mention important appointments Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe held, he served as Officer Commanding Operations at No.06 Helicopter Squadron Vavuniya and No.08 Light Transport Squadron Ratmalana prior to his appointment at AFHQ as Staff officer Operations-1 at Directorate of Operations. Subsequently he was appointed as Commanding Officer at No.08 Light Transport Squadron in 2006. Soon after the First LTTE air attack he was appointed as Commanding Officer Air Defence Command and Control Centre to sphere head the Operational arm of Air Defence in SLAF. In year 2008 he was appointed as Base Commander SLAF Base China-bay where he held the appointment of Commandant Air Force Academy parallel to his Base Commander duties.

After the LTTE air attack on Colombo oil refineries in November 2008, Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe was called back to take over the entire Air Defence of the country as the Overall Operations Commander-Air Defence within 24 hours notice. After assuming the office of OOC-AD, Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe delivered the much expected results of shooting down of two LTTE aircrafts on the first instance itself on 20 February 2009 giving relief to the entire nation.

Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe subsequently commanded SLAF Base Anuradhapura from July 2010 to December 2011, SLAF Base Vavuniya from January 2013 to May 2013, SLAF Base Ratmalana from June 2013 to January 2016 and SLAF Academy China-bay for the second time from January 2016 to August 2017. Presently he has taken over the duties as Director Training at SLAF Head Quarters from August 2017.

In his academic qualifications, Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe has completed his first Masters degree with “MERIT PASS” from Kotalawala Defence University (MSc in Management) in 2005. In 2009/10 he followed the Armed Forces War course at prestigious National Defence University in Pakistan and colourfully graduated with “A” grading in MSc in War Stu & Defence Mgt. In 2012 he has followed National Defence Course at prestigious National Defence College Bangladesh and graduated with Master of Security Studies (MoSS) with the distinguished title ndc. He had successfully completed a 4 year LLB degree at Open University Colombo and was awarded Bachelor of Laws degree in April 2013. He also attended courses on Comprehensive Security Response for Terrorism in Hawaii, USA, Defence Orientation Course in Netherlands, Basic Staff Course and Flight Safety Officers’ Course in Pakistan. Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe is a VVIP rated pilot with 6500 flying hours both from Fixed & Rotory wing aircraft to his credit.
