The Aircraft Spares Depot celebrated its 21th anniversary on 11th November 2017 at SLAF Base Katunayake with the Working parade and religious activities under the leadership of Wg Cdr NP Meragalage. Looking down the memory lane of the depot, the expansion in infrastructure and capabilities are as follows,

The Aircraft Spares Depot was established on 11th November 1996 under the patronage of then Cmdr of the AF AM J.Weerakkody with the leadership of then Sqn Ldr WER Fernando as the first Commanding Officer; functioning under the Director of Logistics. The aim of establishing this depot was to provide direct support in importing and exporting aircraft components for overhaul and repairs as well as new purchases. The Depot had its import hanger, RPU hanger and De-humidifier Hanger. During the command of, then Gp Capt SP Samararatne, the Export hanger, Admin building and the Parade Square was added to the depots infrastructure.

The Depot further expanded its capabilities in the latter part of year 2008 by establishing the Aeronautical Inspection Services cell which is under the purview of the DAE and CQAO. The first AISO (Aeronautical Inspection services Officer) was Sqn Ldr WD Dassanayake with quality inspectors of each aero trade created the AIS Cell.  

After passing down 11 commanding officers, in the year 2015 the  infrastructure further expended with an additional qty 02 pre fabricated hangers erected for the for the export and “A” Group along with the much awaited vehicle park.

During the past 21 years of dedicated commitment to the SLAF, the ASD has reached new horizons from its original handling of import and export goods to calibrating of precision tools & equipment, UN Mission troop rotation, packing of aircraft related components, etc

This depot in a sister formation of the log formations at SLAF Base Katunayake joining hands with S&MD and EPAU.

 Presently the depot is spearheaded by commanding Officer Wg Cdr NP Meragalage, Chief Equipment Officer Sqn Ldr BHKK De A Senevirathne and Aeronautical Inspection Service Officer Sqn Ldr WMKN Wickramasinghe with 03 junior Officers, 36 airmen and 05 civilians.
