Airmen Jeewan Jayasinghe pedals to the top - Maurice Coomerawel Cycle Race

Airman Jeewan Jayasinghe was placed first in the Maurice Coomerawel Memorial Criterium Open Cycle Race whilst Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake Tech Formation and Bandaranaike International Airport(BIA) team became the Inter Unit Cycle men’sand women’s Champions respectively yesterday (17th July 2011) at the Vihara Maha Devi park.

 Jeewan Jayasinghe secured his place with 62 points amongst 68 competitors whilst Sudeera Nilanga of Police finished second. Navin Ruchira, Samantha Lakmal and Kumara Abeyinghe of SLAF secured third, fourth and fifth places respectively. Niluka Shamalee of Sama Cycling club became the winner of the women’s open event followed by SLAF Niroshani Perera who  grabbed second place. Manomi Kumari of Lihini Cycle Club came third whilst Dinesha Dilrukshi, Sudarika Sudarshani, Iresha Ranasinghe, Prasadika Silva and Kanchana Lakmali of the SLAF secured the  4th, 5th, 6th,7th and 8th places respectively.

In the Inter Unit Cycle Championship where men and women of the SLAF peddled Standard bikes, Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake Tech Formation and SLAF BIA (Bandaranaike International Airport) became the Champions whilst SLAF Ekala were the runners up in both categories.

In the Inter Unit open cycle race, Airman Kumara NGS of Colombo and Airwomen Fernando WSR of BIA won the men and women Championship respectively.

This event was organized to commemorate 7 times winner of Tour De Lanka, the late Maurice Coomerawel who participated in the Rome Olympics in 1960. It  was organized by the SLAF cycle club in association with the Winged Wheel Cycle club. 

David Pieris Company’s Section Manager, Mr. Nihal Silva, Zonal Manager Mr. Surendra Hettiarachchi, Director Health Services Air Commodore DMS Karunarathne and the Commanding Officer of SLAF Colombo Air Commodore Vijitha Gunaratna were among the guests invitees whilst Chairman SLAF Cycling Air Vice Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala and Secretary  SLAF Cycling Group Captain Sujeewan Senerathne were also present at the event.
