Air Vice Marshal Gihan Seneviratne is a product of St. Joseph's College, Colombo, and a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy Class of 1996. He joined the Sri Lanka Air Force on 28 May 1992, and was commissioned on 28 May 1996, as a Pilot Officer in the Aeronautical and General Engineering Branch.

During his tenure in the SLAF, he has served in various capacities, with some noteworthy appointments including Command Media Officer and Staff Officer to the Commander of the Air Force. He also held the position of SLAF's first Director of Media, Commanding Officer of the Junior Command and Staff College and Deputy Director General Engineering and Director of Motor Transport before being appointed as the Director-General General Engineering in the SLAF.

Air Vice Marshal Seneviratne completed Junior Command and Staff College Course No. 14, emerging as the top-ranking graduate and securing the Golden Pen award for the best Commandant's research. As a member of Course No. 2 at the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Sapugaskande, he graduated at the top of the Air Wing, winning the Golden Pen for the Best Individual Research Paper and earning a place on the Commandant's Honours List. He is a graduate of the National Defence College in Mirpur, Bangladesh, and has earned a Master's degree in Defence Studies from the University of Kelaniya and a Master of Social Science in Security and Development from the Bangladesh University of Professionals.

In recognition of his distinguished service, he has been awarded the "Uththama Seva Padakkama." Air Commodore Seneviratne also holds the position of Chairman of the Sri Lanka Air Force Karate within the SLAF Sports Council.

Air Vice Marshal Seneviratne is married to Sharmali and is blessed with two daughters, Tracy and Cassandra.
