MENTAL HEALTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR SERVICE PERSONNEL ORGANIZED BY SEVA VANITHA UNIT, SLAF BASE ANURADHAPURA

The Seva Vanitha Unit of Sri Lanka Air Force Base Anuradhapura organized a Mental Health Development Programme yesterday (19 August 2026) for airmen and airwomen of the Base, with the objective of promoting psychological well-being, emotional resilience and a healthy work environment among Air Force personnel under the guidance of the Base Commander Air Commodore Pradeep Piyarathne.

The programme featured a series of informative and interactive lectures covering three important areas: Stress Management, Drug Abuse Prevention and Prevention of Sexual Harassment. The sessions focused on equipping participants with practical knowledge and awareness to effectively manage stress, make responsible decisions, maintain healthy interpersonal relationships and contribute towards a safe and respectful workplace.

The programme was conducted with the following valuable contribution of distinguished resource personnel:

•Prof. Amila Isuru, Consultant Psychiatrist and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Rajarata
•Dr. Amila Hewarathne, Consultant Psychiatrist, Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura
•Flying Officer Taniya Jayasooriya, Psychologist, SLAF Base Anuradhapura

The resource personnel shared their professional expertise and provided valuable guidance on recognizing stress, developing healthy coping mechanisms, understanding the consequences of drug abuse, and promoting respectful and professional conduct within the workplace.

The interactive nature of the programme provided airmen and airwomen with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge, engage in discussions and develop a better understanding of mental health and personal well-being.

The initiative demonstrates the commitment of the Seva Vanitha Unit and SLAF Base Anuradhapura towards the welfare and holistic development of Air Force personnel. By strengthening awareness of mental health, responsible behaviour and workplace safety, the programme contributes towards creating a healthy, resilient, disciplined and motivated workforce capable of fulfilling their duties with confidence and dedication.

The programme concluded with an emphasis on the importance of maintaining mental well-being, seeking professional assistance when necessary, and fostering a supportive and respectful environment within the Sri Lanka Air Force.
