Budding “Anganpora” Fighters Trace Historical Footprints

The first batch of Air Kids who are being trained in Anganpora had an opportunity to visit the historical sites of Seethawaka, where the remnants of the golden era of Anganpora lie scattered with a multiplicity of sites in the areas of the Seethawaka Kingdom.

The Anganpora training for school Kids of the SLAF commenced on 8 May 2013 on the directives of the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal HD Abeywickrama. The main intention of this initiative is to promote the martial art that is indigenous to Sri Lanka and to inculcate a basic knowledge of the art to students studying in grades eight to twelve.

The tour was organized with the aim of placing the field of their study in a historic context. During the tour they visited places like Mulleriyawa battle field, Malwana historic fort, Raasapanagala, Hanwella fort, Seethawaka Palace, Berendi Kovil, Tomb of King Seethawaka Rajasinghe, Rankadu Paththini Dewalaya (Temple), Medagoda Paththini Dewalaya, Kadadora Paththini Dewalaya, Korathota Paththini Dewalaya and historical temples viz. Galwana, Lenagampola, Sankapiddi, Samanabedda, Lewangama, Maniyangama and Korathota where the eighteen Arachchies (Leaders of respective area who mastered the Angan Satan Kalawa) who fought alongside King Seethawaka Rajasinghe during the battle of Mulleriyawa in 1562, lived based at these temples in the Korathota area.

Sixteen kids got the maximum use of this tour where they listened with intent interest as the various guides explained in great detail what had happened and the sequence of events that led up to the individual event. Deshamanya Mahanthaarachchige Ajantha Perera who has taken the responsibility of nurturing and fostering this fighting technique representing the ancestry of “Korathota Arachchi Tradition” conducted demonstrations and due opportunity for these kids to attend a practical session at the training centre of Korathota Angan Ranapila during their tour to Korathota, Kaduwela.
