COMMANDER'S CUP SOCCER FRIENDSHIP CHALLENGE TROPHY KICKED OFF IN KILINOCHCHI

The SLAF kicked off the Commander's Cup Soccer Friendship Challenge Trophy 2024 yesterday (10 February 2024) at the Northern Province Sports Complex in Kilinochchi. Organized in line with the Air Force's 73rd anniversary, the tournament aims to provide talented young footballers in the Northern Province with a platform to display their skills and potentially reach the national level.

The Championship is structured under the guidance of the Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa and the overall Championship is coordinated by Chairman SLAF Soccer, Air Vice Marshal Suresh Fernando. The competition features eleven teams from across the Northern Province, including Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Madhu Manthei, Point Pedro, Vavuniya, Vadamarachchi, Valikkamat, Island, Poonakary and Mullaitivu. All teams are registered with the Football Federation of Sri Lanka.

The preliminary rounds are played at two main venues: the Northern Province Sports Complex in Kilinochchi and the Multi-Sports Field Northern Naval Command in Kankasanthurai. The finals will be held at the Durayappah Stadium in Jaffna in early March 2024.

The Commander's Cup Soccer Friendship Challenge Trophy 2024 is being conducted in collaboration with the Football Federation of Sri Lanka and adheres to FIFA rules and regulations. The tournament is expected to benefit young, talented footballers while also generating excitement among football fans in the Northern Province.  

Sri Lanka Air Force, is the only aerial arm among the Sri Lanka Armed Forces, responsible for defending the nation's airspace and supporting its sister services for all kind of operations.
