SLAF SUPPORTS HUMAN-ELEPHANT CONFLICT MITIGATION OPERATION WITH DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE CONSERVATION
5:10pm on Thursday 26th June 2025
In response to a request from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the SLAF deployed dedicated teams to assist in a Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation Operation conducted from 21 to 23 June 2025. The initiative aimed to safely deter wild elephants from entering human settlements and agricultural lands in areas identified as high-risk for human-elephant conflict. This joint operation was carried out in coordination with the Department of Wildlife Conservation, with the participation of the Sri Lanka Police and the Tri-Forces.

The SLAF contribution involved the deployment of three teams, each consisting of ten personnel from SLAF Station Sigiriya. These teams were tasked with supporting field operations in the Ambulambe, Thalakiriyagama and Dhandupadiruppa areas over the three-day period. Their efforts were focused on non-invasive methods to guide elephant movements back toward forested zones, working alongside other agencies to ensure the safety of both local communities and the animals involved. The operation was completed successfully without any reported incidents, effectively meeting its objectives.
