HIGH-LEVEL PROGRESS REVIEW MEETING HELD ON HINGURAKGODA RUNWAY REHABILITATION PROJECT
A high-level progress review meeting on the Rehabilitation Project of the Hingurakgoda Runway, aimed at meeting international aviation standards, was held yesterday (04 November 2025) at SLAF Base Hingurakgoda.
Prior to the review meeting, the visiting delegation conducted a comprehensive site inspection of the ongoing construction activities. The meeting was chaired by the Director, Special Project Management Unit, Air Vice Marshal Sumedha De Silva, in the presence of the Base Commander, SLAF Base Hingurakgoda, Air Commodore Dinesh Jayaweera.
The visiting delegation comprised the Chief Financial Officer (Accounts & Finance), Mr. LDN Kumarasiri, Director General (Planning), Mrs. Nirasha Dissanayaka, Director Monitoring and Evaluation (Technical), Eng. Mrs. WAS Sarojini and Deputy Director Planning, Mrs. MAA Niroshini from the Ministry of Defence, along with the Additional Director General (Engineering Services), Dr. SJ Widanapathiranage and representatives from the Road Development Authority, Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited, the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation.
The session focused on evaluating construction progress, addressing implementation challenges and strengthening inter-agency coordination to ensure timely and efficient project completion.
Project teams presented detailed updates on key milestones, current progress, and future plans, while also addressing stakeholder concerns. The visiting delegation commended the Air Field Construction Wing of the SLAF for its dedicated efforts and remarkable progress in upgrading the facility to meet international standards. The project is being implemented under the patronage of Director Special Project Management Unit, Air Vice Marshal Sumedha De Silva, with technical consultation from the Road Development Authority.

The delegation further praised the high standard of workmanship and quality maintained throughout the construction process, noting that 1,650m of the planned 2,300m runway have already been completed since the project’s commencement on 14 August 2024.
