The SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, with the generous support of numerous contributors, carried out an extensive disaster relief operation across several severely affected areas, extending vital assistance to vulnerable communities in the aftermath of recent adverse weather conditions.
The relief initiative focused on supporting pregnant mothers, newborn babies, children, women and teenage girls, who are among the most at risk during emergency situations. Under the guidance of the Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs Krishanthi Edirisinghe, special emphasis was placed on maternal and child wellbeing, recognising the heightened challenges faced due to disruptions in healthcare, nutrition, hygiene and safe living conditions during disasters.
Demonstrating a swift and coordinated response, relief assistance was distributed in Chilaw, the Gampola region including Doluwa, Rajathalawa, Udagama and Nawalapitiya; and the remote community of Mandaram Nuwara, which was reached through airlifted operations. In the Nuwara Eliya District, distributions were carried out through several Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions, namely Nawathispane, Walapane, Ragala, Kothmale, Lindula, Kotagala, Ambagamuwa, Nuwara Eliya, Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council area, Mathurata, Hanguranketha and Bogawanthalawa. Further assistance was also extended to Thamankaduwa in Polonnaruwa and Madhyama Nuwara in Anuradhapura.
