NO. 37 DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND FIRST RESPONSE BASIC COURSE CONCLUDES AT SLAF DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING SCHOOL DIGANA
The Certificate Awarding Ceremony of No. 37 Disaster Management and First Response Basic Course was held today (29 December 2025) at the SLAF Disaster Management Training School (DMTS) Digana. The Director General Ground Operations, Air Vice Marshal Ruwan Chandima, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The Commanding Officer of the Disaster Management Training School, Group Captain DGPL Jayathilaka, the Officer Commanding Training, Wing Commander APUR Dharmasiri, along with all officers and other ranks of the School, were also present at the ceremony.
The eighty working days training programme focused on the introduction to disasters and hazard profiles, the Disaster Management Council Act and the role of the Disaster Management Centre, an overview of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), hazard and vulnerability assessment, information technology related to disaster management and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), collapsed structure search and rescue, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) and the international framework of disaster management, disaster preparedness plans, civil law pertaining to emergency response, Emergency Operation Centres (EOC), contingency plans (CP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), IDP camp management, first aid, casualty handling and death management, fire and rescue, and water search and rescue.
In addition, the trainees undertook educational visits to the Meteorological Department, Disaster Management Centre, National Building Research Organization (NBRO), Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB), Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (AERC), Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), and the Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department (CCC&RMD).
A total of 29 trainees received their certificates at the ceremony, comprising one officer and twenty airmen from the SLAF, one officer and two other ranks from the Sri Lanka Army, three sailors from the Sri Lanka Navy, and one officer and one Police Constable from the Special Task Force.
