SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES OPENS AT SLAF BASE KATUNAYAKE WITH CERTIFICATE AWARDING OF NO. 01 ALLIED HEALTH COURSE
The opening ceremony of the School of Allied Health Sciences at SLAF Base Katunayke was held today (20 January 2026) under the auspices of Director General Health Services, Air Vice Marshal (Dr.) Lalith Jayaweera. This marks a significant step towards strengthening the medical and paramedical training capabilities of the Tri Services. The establishment of this school addresses a critical requirement of developing skilled allied heath professionals within the armed forces.
The School was established to train allied health personnel in specialized fields of physiotherapy, laboratory technology, ECG technology and other allied health disciplines, which play a vital role in preventive care, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and maintaining the operational readiness of service personnel. This initiative aims to overcome the shortage of trained allied health professionals within the tri services by developing disciplined, mission oriented and technically competent health care professionals within the military framework.
Certificates were awarded to 13 trainees comprising three Sri Lanka Army, six Sri Lanka Navy and four Sri Lanka Air Force personnel. The course was conducted for a period of two years from 10 October 23 to 15 October 25. Under the guidance of the Commanding Officer Hospital Group Captain Sampath Hewawasam, the course was conducted by Squadron Leader Chameera Neththikumara following a national curriculum on physiotherapy.
The event was graced by the presence of Director General Training, Air Vice Marshal Thushara Weeraratne, Director General Constructions Engineering, Air Vice Marshal Vajira Senadheera, Representing the Director General Health Services of SL Army, Colonel Aruna Kumara and representing the Director General Health Services of SL Navy, Commodore Hiran Mullegama, Director Medical Services, Air Commodore Neeluka Abeysekara, Director Dental Services, Air Commodore Kumudu Weerasekara, the Base Commander SLAF Base Katunayake, Air Commodore Amitha Jayamaha and Formation Commanding Officers and a cross section of personnel at SLAF Base Katunayake.
The construction of the school began in September 2025 with financial aid received from the Command Welfare Fund. The project was designed by the Directorate of Construction Engineering and constructed by the Construction Engineering Wing SLAF Base Katunayake.
