UPGRADED DAY CARE CENTRE DECLARED OPEN AT SLAF BASE KATUNAYAKE
Expanding the scope of personnel welfare, the newly constructed and upgraded Day Care Centre at SLAF Base Katunayake was ceremonially declared open today (22 March 2026). The event was graced by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe along with the Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Krishanthi Edirisinghe.
Upon arrival, the Commander, the Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, and other visiting dignitaries were warmly received by the Base Commander of SLAF Base Katunayake, Air Vice Marshal Amitha Jayamaha.
The transformation of the Day Care Centre into a modern, upgraded facility represents a significant milestone in the SLAF’s ongoing commitment to the well-being of its service members. Notably, the new centre has been established immediately adjacent to the existing international-standard SLAF Pre-School complex. This strategic placement ensures a seamless transition for children after preschool hours, eliminating the need for additional transportation and providing maximum convenience for serving parents.
By providing a secure and nurturing environment during duty hours, the centre offers essential support to officers and other ranks, enabling them to maintain an effective balance between their demanding professional duties and parental responsibilities.
The project, completed under the direct supervision of the Base Commander, features enhanced child-friendly infrastructure, including modern learning spaces, interactive play zones and a staff of professionally trained caretakers. The environment has been specifically designed to ensure the highest standards of safety and early childhood development.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Director General Welfare, Air Vice Marshal Rajinth Jayewardene, senior officers, senior members of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit and a cross-section of service personnel, all gathered to mark the inauguration of this vital welfare asset.
