In line with the 75th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force, SLAF Hospital Colombo successfully concluded a major mass cataract surgery campaign on 24 and 26 March 2026, dedicated to restoring the vision of retired SLAF personnel and the families of serving members.
This welfare initiative was made possible through the seamless collaboration between the Air Force Directorate of Health Services and specialized civilian healthcare professionals. The surgeries were conducted under the expert guidance of Group Captain (Dr.) Abhaya Jayasekara, Consultant Eye Surgeon at SLAF Hospital Colombo; Dr. Kasun Gunawardhana, Consultant Eye Surgeon from General Hospital Kuliyapitiya and Dr. (Mrs.) Marie Fernando, Visiting Consultant Anesthesiologist at SLAF Hospital Colombo. The surgical team was further supported by a highly skilled group of ophthalmology-specialized nursing staff from GH Kuliyapitiya and GH Panadura, working closely with the dedicated SLAF Theater Staff.
During the campaign, 73 out of 75 planned surgeries were successfully completed on 24 March, with two patients unable to attend due to sudden illness. An additional 20 successful procedures were carried out today (26 March 2026), bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 93 patients.
