CORPORAL RUMESH THARANGA RETURNS HOME AFTER REMARKABLE INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS
Corporal Rumesh Tharanga of the Sri Lanka Air Force, the world's No. 2-ranked men's javelin thrower, returned to Sri Lanka yesterday (20 June 2026) following a remarkable international campaign that included outstanding performances on the Diamond League circuit. During the tour, he secured three gold medals and one silver medal, highlighted by a sensational 92.62m meeting record in Rome.
Demonstrating exceptional talent and determination against some of the world's leading athletes, Corporal Tharanga delivered outstanding performances throughout his international tour, culminating in his participation at the Doha Diamond League. His achievements have brought immense honour to Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Air Force while further enhancing the nation's reputation in international athletics.
Upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, Corporal Tharanga was warmly welcomed by officials of the SLAF Athletics Committee, including the Secretary Group Captain Amith Priyadarshana and Members of the Air Force Athletics Team, the Vice President of Sri Lanka Athletics Mr. Jagath Gnanasiri, fellow Air Force personnel and a large gathering of sports enthusiasts
