SLAF PLAYERS SHINE IN STATE SERVICES NETBALL TRIUMPH
The State Services Netball Team successfully defended its Inter-Association Netball Championship title for the second consecutive year by defeating the Mercantile Services Team in the final of the Inter-Association Netball Tournament 2026, held yesterday (21 June 2026) at the Torrington Outdoor Grounds, Colombo.
The tournament, which was initially postponed due to adverse weather conditions, was eventually conducted last weekend with the participation of 24 district associations from across the country.
The championship final witnessed a highly competitive encounter between the State Services and Mercantile Services teams. Although Mercantile Services held a narrow 20-17 lead at halftime, the State Services Team displayed exceptional determination and teamwork in the second half, adopting an aggressive style of play to secure a convincing 45-29 victory and retain the championship title.
Seven players from the Sri Lanka Air Force represented the victorious State Services Team and played a pivotal role in the team's outstanding performance throughout the tournament.
Adding to the achievement, two SLAF players earned individual accolades for their exceptional performances. Leading Aircraftwoman Wickramarathna PCD was adjudged the Best Centre Court Player, while Leading Aircraftwoman Sinhabahu SADJM received the award for Best Shooter.
The tournament was graced by the Hon. Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, as the Chief Guest. The Deputy Minister of Sports, Hon. Sugath Thilakarathna, was also present at the occasion.
