NO. 1 FLYING TRAINING WING MARKS 75 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN MILITARY AVIATION TRAINING
No. 1 Flying Training Wing (No 1 FTW) proudly known as the “Cradle of Military Aviators” commemorated its 75th Anniversary today (01 September 2026) at the Sri Lanka Air Force Academy China Bay marking seven and a half decades of distinguished service and excellence in military flying training.
The proud history of No. 1 FTW dates back to 01 September 1951, when No. 1 Flight of the Royal Ceylon Air Force was established at Royal Air Force Station Katunayake under the command of Flight Lieutenant Norman Lush of the Royal Air Force. Commencing operations with four De Havilland Chipmunk T.10 aircraft, the Flight that laid the foundation for a legacy that has continued for 75 years. During its formative years, the Flight expanded its capabilities with the induction of additional Chipmunk aircraft in 1952 followed by British Airspeed Oxford aircraft in 1953 for flying training and reconnaissance missions. The induction of the Boulton Paul Balliol in 1954 marked a further milestone enabling the Flight to undertake Advanced Flying Training and enhancing its operational capabilities.
A significant transformation took place in 1963 with the relocation of the Flying Training School to China Bay. The move provided a more suitable environment for expanding military flying training programmes and established China Bay as a key center for military aviation training in Sri Lanka. In 1972, six Cessna 150 aircraft were inducted replacing the ageing Chipmunks and introducing a new era of flying training. The Flying Training School was subsequently incorporated into the Sri Lanka Air Force Academy and formally designated as No. 1 Flying Training Wing. Over the decades, the Wing has continuously evolved in response to the changing requirements of military aviation. Today, it operates a substantial fleet of training aircraft including PT-6 and Cessna 150 aircraft supporting basic and intermediate flying training.
As part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations, No. 1 FTW conducted several community-oriented initiatives. On 07 August 2026, personnel of No 1 FTW participated in a Shramadhana campaign at the China Bay Temple followed by a Bodhi Pooja ceremony. On 15 August 2026, a cross-section of Officers and Airmen visited the Revatha Children’s Home in Trincomalee where they spent time with the children, organized a film screening, shared a meal and distributed gifts and school supplies.
The main anniversary commemoration was held today (01 September 2026) with a ceremonial parade reviewed by the Commanding Officer, Group Captain Ershad Mutaliph. Families of Wing personnel were also invited to visit the hangar where they received briefings on aircraft and aviation technologies followed by tea and lunch as part of the commemorative programme.
The 75-year journey of No. 1 FTW remains a testament to the dedication and professionalism of generations of personnel who have contributed to the development of military aviation in Sri Lanka. As it enters its next chapter, the Wing remains committed to maintaining its proud legacy and continuing to produce professionally competent, disciplined and operationally capable military aviators for the nation.
