SLAF BASE KATUNAYAKE CELEBRATES 75 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE NATION
Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake marked its 75th Anniversary of dedicated service to the Nation with a series of commemorative events, reflecting its proud legacy and enduring contribution to the Sri Lanka Air Force. The anniversary celebrations commenced with the customary Working Parade, commanded by Group Captain Gihan Rodrigo and reviewed by the Base Commander, Air Vice Marshal Amith Jayamaha.
The history of SLAF Base Katunayake is closely intertwined with the development of the Sri Lanka Air Force. The No. 02 Heavy Transport Squadron, which remains based at Katunayake to date, was established on 01 September 1957, followed by the establishment of several other formations over the years. Today, the Air Base is home to three flying formations and 29 lodger formations, providing a wide range of vital operational, logistical and administrative services to the Sri Lanka Air Force.
As part of the 75th Anniversary programme, a welfare initiative was conducted at the Leprosy Hospital, Handala, with the aim of extending care and support to those in need. During the programme, two wheelchairs, dry ration packs, essential medicines and a meal were donated to the hospital. The anniversary programme also included a cake-cutting ceremony held at Astra Hall, followed by the screening of a specially produced short video highlighting the rich history, milestones and achievements of SLAF Base Katunayake over the past 75 years.
