RECEIPT OF SPARE PARTS FROM THE INDIAN AIR FORCE FOR INDRA MK II RADAR SYSTEMS
The INDRA Mk II Ground-Based Air Surveillance Radar Systems play a vital strategic role in strengthening the surveillance capability of the National Air Defence System. They provide essential air situation awareness and support the timely detection and monitoring of aerial threats. Maintaining these systems at a high level of operational readiness is therefore essential to the continuous availability of the national air surveillance capability.
Over recent years, however, the maintenance and operational sustainability of the INDRA Mk II Radar Systems have been adversely affected by shortages of essential Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), modules and associated components. These shortages have created considerable difficulties in carrying out scheduled and corrective maintenance, affecting the long-term serviceability and operational readiness of the radar systems.
To address this requirement, the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) sought the assistance of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in obtaining spare parts for the continued maintenance and operational sustainment of the INDRA Mk II Radar Systems. The requirement was discussed during the 2025 Staff Talks between the SLAF and IAF, at which both Co-Chairs agreed to support the provision of essential spare parts on a free-of-charge (FOC) basis.
Accordingly, the IAF facilitated the provision of 3,781 spare parts required for the maintenance of the INDRA Mk II Radar Systems. The consignment was conveyed to Sri Lanka aboard Indian Navy Ship Udaygiri during its scheduled visit to Colombo on 08 September 2026. The consignment was formally unloaded and received at the Port of Colombo on 08 September 2026 under the supervision of the CO, Radar Maintenance Wing, SLAF Base Katunayake with the participation of the designated technical crew and support staff. The items were placed in storage at ASD Hangar, SLAF Base Katunayake on 09 September 2026 to ensure their proper custody and safe storage pending completion of administrative formalities and formal distribution to the radar squadrons
