Airwomen Rewrite History in the Night Sky
Corporal Hewagamage TND and Leading Air Craftswoman Ranasinghe KHN of Sri Lanka Air Force rewrote history by becoming the first women in South Asia to successfully complete Night Skydiving on 19 October 2010.

The two parachutists displayed their skills in on Tuesday night at SLAF Station Amapara. Both women completed the dives as part of the 5th Basic Sky Diving Course. This batch consisted of 8 members with 6 male and 2 female paratroopers.

Female paratroopers have achieved a line of rapid successes since their foray into parachuting just a few years back. The year 2010 has been especially significant for LAC Ranasinghe who pocketed another triumph in July by being in the pair who became the first women in South Asia to complete 200 parachute jumps.

Meanwhile the Commanding Officer of the SLAF Parachute Training School at SLAF Base Katunayake, Wing Commander Harischandra Herath also achieved another feat this week by completing 50 jumps of Night Sky Diving.

The country will continue to see the SLAF paratroopers excel in their trade as early as next week, when on 28 October a batch of 35 males and 5 female paratroopers who completed their Basic Parachute Course have their passing-out parade.
