
SECRETARY DEFENCE CONDUCTS SECURITY ASSESSMENT VISIT TO BATTICALOA

The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), undertook an inspection visit to the Batticaloa region in the Eastern Province today (03 June 2025), with the aim of assessing the current security situation.
The visit was also attended by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe.
During the visit, the Defence Secretary held discussions with senior officers of the tri-services and the police deployed in the area, focusing on prevailing security issues and evaluating the preparedness of the forces to effectively respond to any potential emergencies.
The Secretary Defence, addressing at the 243 Infantry Brigade, praised the tri-forces and police for their role in maintaining security and supporting humanitarian efforts. He called for stronger engagement with local communities in Batticaloa to build trust and harmony. Emphasizing vigilance against extremist threats in the Eastern Province, he instructed joint planning by the tri-forces and Police STF. He also stressed the need to strengthen security in key tourist areas like Batticaloa, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay.
